John Albert Okerbloom
John Albert Okerbloom, M.D., age 62, Council Bluffs, passed away October 27, 2014, at Risen Son Christian Village in Council Bluffs.
John was born, September 1, 1952, in Tribune, Kansas, to Albert W. and June R. (Bloedel) Okerbloom, and graduated from Fremont Mills High School where he was Valedictorian in 1970. John attended Simpson College for one year and transferred to Drake University where he graduated in 1974. He was accepted into Medical School at the University of Iowa, graduating in 1978. He did internal medicine residency in Des Moines from 1978-1981. Oncology fellowship in Des Moines from 1981-1982 then to UNMC from 1982-1983. John started Heartland Oncology and Hematology in Council Bluffs in 1983 and retired in 2014. He was united in marriage to Barbara Lynne Malcom, who grew up with John from 5th grade until graduating. They were married on August 18, 1973, and to this union, sons John Nathan and Neal Scott were born.
John is preceded in death by his parents, Albert & June.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara; sons, Nathan and Tina, Neal and Jami, all of Council Bluffs, 7 grandchildren, Dylan, Adrian, Andrew, Owen, Lilly, Sam and Erica; sister, Dorothy Hollinger and husband Ben of Tabor, Iowa. John will be remembered for his love of reading, crossword puzzles, traveling with family, the Iowa Hawkeyes, snowmobiling, his patients and most of all his family and grandchildren. Barb and John are members of St. John’s United Church of Christ.
